No, right? Then how do you expect your devices to be free from virus and malware practices when you don’t regularly clean them?

COVID 19 has made hygiene your top priority but it shouldn’t be limited to just cleaning your hands and homes regularly but also your devices. It’s hard to find a sphere of human activity which is untouched by the coronavirus pandemic. Lockdown has made you spend hours glued to your devices as everything from work to entertainment happens online. Hence, COVID 19 is just not a threat to our real lives but also our digital lives.

Digital hygiene is everything from organizing files to limiting screen time to installing new apps to make digital life secure and easier. As more and more of our lives move online, it requires grooming just like your homes. It’s high time to clean up and maintain your digital world.

We’ll give you some good reasons to why is digital hygiene so important:

CYBERSECURITY

There has been a multi-fold increase in cyber-attacks during the lockdown. Companies and government constantly warn the public against such crime but still, some fall prey to such crimes.

Right after the PM announced the PM CARES Fund, hundreds of similar websites were made and messages were circulated over the Internet.

The CBI warned against malicious software which impersonates a link from a legitimate source and tricks users into installing it on their smartphones.

Criminals try to trick users into revealing personal data through fraud e-mails, links, fake otps etc.

Every day, Gmail blocks more than 100 million phishing emails related to COVID 19.

The phishing attacks and scams use both fear and financial incentives to create urgency to prompt users to respond. Like impersonating authoritative government organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) for fraudulent donations or distribute malware.

Protect your e-wallets

KYC frauds also became popular in the last few months. Usually, the victim gets a text message stating his e-wallet needs to be KYC compliant. They can easily trick you and access your wallet ID and password. Since most of the applications ask for KYC, it has become so easy to access all the personal details. Fake OTPs are used to hack your devices.

Cookies

Cookies are generally used for tracking your activities when online. Generally, every website you visit on the internet leaves a little snippet of data to your devices. Not all cookies are bad but then you need to beware of them on your devices because you don’t want everyone to know about your activities on the web.

Hence, you must organize your inbox and keep a check on permissions you give to websites as the lockdown has turned out to be a golden period for online scammers.

SCREEN TIME

COVID-19 Impact: Screen time up by 100% for children- The Economic Times

Kids are spending 5 additional hours on an average daily on their phones. Parents fear that their kids may unknowingly access inappropriate information online and use studying as an excuse to access non-educational content. However, most of them still haven’t taken any actions yet. They are unintentionally exposing their kids to online threats and content that may go beyond their capacity to handle.

Medical experts give a word of caution as excessive screen time can cause issues ranging from dryness of eyes to mental stress in children and adults- The Indian Express

Demand for streaming websites across the globe intensified, social media and online gaming are flourishing. Products and services create a seemingly infinite amount of engaging content because they want you to stick to your screen for as long as possible.

But then nothing creates guilt like the weekly notification telling us our screen time, right? We know it’s an overwhelming time and you are finding new ways to live but then it’s important to also find a balance. After all who likes poor sight, bad posture and inadequate sleep.

STORAGE

90% of mobile time is spent on apps. Research shows that there are between 60 and 90 apps installed on the average smartphone but the majority of mobile time is spent using three apps.

Every single app and account can be used to gain entry into everything you own because most of these are either attached your emails or other apps.

How many apps do you have on your phone which you probably never use?

How many images do you have right now on your phone but hardly look at any of them?

Having a world with fewer apps and images to ignore and more storage on your phone for meme screenshots is real happiness!

This quarantine became a blessing for few but at the same time, few struggled to maintain their sanity. Hope you are in good health and use this time to get organized, keep a routine, limit your media exposure, self-reflect and reset your priorities, spend time with family and last but not the least keep your digital world clean.

Can you expect yourself to be free from any infection and disease, smell good and feel healthy even after not taking a bath for months?
